Keeping a gratitude journal is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your focus on abundance. They key to this is to make it a daily practice to write in your journal - something that takes just minutes a day once you get into the flow.
Why keep a journal?
Too often, we focus on what isn't going well in our lives and lose sight of all the great things that we have and the people we appreciate. Practicing gratitude each day is a key element of the law of attraction and attracting abundance into our lives in all areas. Your journal should cover any aspects of your life that you want to focus on, examples are: relationships, friendships, work / career, health, home life etc.
Creating your journal
A journal can be kept in any notebook but I would suggest that you get a notebook that really appeals to you and that is attractive to the eye so that you enjoy it as you write it. My journal is a small A5 notebook with a pretty hardback cover that I found in a store one day - it's small enough to tuck into by bedside drawer or even carry in my bag. I have decorated the inside cover with some drawings of flowers and I use a photo of my husband and I enjoying ourselves on a holiday as a bookmark. It feels good opening my journal, it's pages are full of good things and even if I don't write in it, I often read it and enjoy the feelings of gratitude again as I did at the time of writing.
Write in the present tense
When you write, write as if the thing you are grateful for is happening now. This keeps it in the present moment and keeps the things you are grateful for in the center of your life. It doesn't matter if the thing you are grateful for is past or something you hope to get in the future. Your subconscious mind must believe that it is happening now for it to be possible.
Three ways to keep your journal
- Free form - write in your journal free style forming a short essay on what you are grateful for. For example: Today I am grateful for the opportunities I received at work today, the sun shining and spending time with my family.
- Reflection list - a daily list of things you are grateful for. I use lists and think of 5 things a day I am grateful for and this works well for me. It is even better if you try and find new things for your list each day. This helps you to take notice of more that is happening around you each day. You can start your list in whatever way suits you. Examples are: I am so happy and grateful now that... or Today I am grateful for...
- Wish list - this is the most powerful way to keep a gratitude journal. It involves writing your gratitude list at the start of the day with a list of things that you are grateful for that haven't happened yet. This may sound like it's a bit back to front but the power of doing it this way is that you create your day by making a list of what you want to happen. As with number 2, you can start you list in whatever way suits you.
I hope you enjoy your journal!
